Crystal Palace confirm Andros Townsend
Crystal Palace have announced their first signing of the summer, as Andros Townsend completes a move to Selhurst Park from Newcastle United.
The English winger has signed a five-year-deal in south London, with the transfer fee set at £13m.
24-year-old Townsend arrives from Newcastle where he played his football in the second half of last season, making 13 appearances for the Toon and netting on four occasions.
It was in the 2010/11 season when Townsend finally got his chance in the Tottenham Hotspur first-team, coming through their academy system. The England international was then sent out on loan numerous times to various football league clubs, before cementing his rank in the Spurs side, going on to make 93 appearances in all competitions.
His first England cap was awarded to him in 2013, and has made 10 more ever since. The former Queens Park Rangers loanee was part of Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2016 provisional squad for this summers’s tournament, but wasn’t given a seat on the plane to the games.
Speaking to the official club website, Townsend has expressed his delight at signing at Selhurst Park:
I’m extremely delighted. I had chats with the manager and chairman before I signed and I’m pleased to a part of Crystal Palace’s future. By the sounds of things it’s going to be a bright one and I can’t wait to get started.
