Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has given an update on the stadium plans but asks for both Croydon Council and Sainsbury’s to show more support to the project.

Speaking to the Croydon Advertiser on Friday Parish said that he feels that the council could show more enthusiasm to the redevelopment project, I would want the council here to be carried away on a tide of enthusiasm for doing it. It feels to me like it is such an iconic project for Croydon and for south London to have this stadium that is beamed out all over the world every week.”

The plans for the redevelopment include bringing up the capacity to 40,000 along with a new main stand as well as work on other parts of the stadium. Parish continued, We’ve got some meetings in the next couple of weeks and we would like to get to a point that we can at least show people something. I’ve got an amazing 3D model of the stadium, the new stand. It’s all there ready to go. We just need to make sure we’ve got everybody behind us.”

He also added that supporters have to patient and understand the difficulties, I would love to show supporters the plans we have got for the stadium but we have to get a real clear idea that we can get it done. I’m not one of those sorts of people who goes for PR stunts for the sake of it. I want to deliver what I say I can deliver.”

Although Parish is concerned over Croydon Council’s lack of enthusiasm about the project, he is more worried about whether Sainsbury’s want the redevelopment to happen, Sainsbury’s need to decide if they are behind it and they are going to help make it a reality. I’m not sure they can scupper the whole thing but they can make it a lot easier than they are making it at the moment. I’d rather give them the opportunity to do the right thing [than talk about what Sainsbury’s concerns are]. We are talking to them at the moment. But I’m not convinced that they will.”

Following the release of the article, a Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: We know the club want to expand the stadium and have been discussing a number of options with them, so they can further develop their plans.”

Palace are back in Premier League action this weekend when they face Middlesbrough at Selhurst Park in what is a crucial game in the race to stay in England’s top division.
