Sam Allardyce has left Crystal Palace stunned after informing the club he wants to quit as manager, the Daily Mail has learned.

It was claimed by the Mail that Allardyce was seeking assurances from Steve Parish before committing his future to the club but after a meeting with the chairman on Tuesday, Allardyce informed him of his desire to leave.

The Palace hierarchy are still said to be interested in pursuing talks with Allardyce and his representatives over staying on as manager, but the former England boss appears to have made up his mind.

The 62-year-old is believed to be unhappy with the club’s transfer policy and did not get the guarantees he wanted that he would be able to strengthen in what he saw as the key areas this summer.

Allardyce masterminded Sunderland’s great escape last summer before leaving the club to take the reigns of the England national team, who he managed for just one game.

Big Sam took charge of Palace at Christmas with the club battling to survive in the Premier League, picking up 26 points in 21 games to keep the Eagles afloat.
