Andros Townsend’s first season at Selhurst Park got off to a rocky start but when Sam Allardyce replaced Alan Pardew as manager, he started to find his best form.

In his first 16 Premier League games of the season, Townsend scored just once and provided one assist, but in the following 20 games he scored twice and added five assists as the Eagles secured their Premier League status in the penultimate week of the season.

Crystal Palace signed Townsend from Newcastle in a £13.25m deal following their relegation to the Championship but Rafa Benitez was keen on bringing the England international winger back to St. James’ Park during the January transfer window but was denied the funds to do so.

The Chronicle state that the Magpies, after winning the Championship and securing promotion back to the Premier League, are still interested in bringing Townsend back to the club a year after he left.

Newcastle signed Townsend from Tottenham in January 2016 for £13.35m but he, along with a number of big names and high earners, were offloaded after relegation was confirmed.

Townsend is as shocked as everyone at Palace following the news that Sam Allardyce has quit as manager and that could be a factor in his decision making regarding his future.

The 25-year-old spoke in admiration of Newcastle and Benitez when he left the club last summer and a possible move back to the northeast would interest him.
