Last time out, Crystal Palace achieved something that no other team in the Premier League have done this season and that is keep a clean sheet against top-of-the-table Manchester City in their goalless draw on Sunday. This ended the Citizens eighteen-game winning run.
The Eagles recorded only their second home clean sheet of the season against the top scorers of the league and that point made sure that they entered 2018 above the relegation zone with just one point separating them from 18th place.
After a shocking start to the season, Crystal Palace have now only lost one of their last ten league games under Roy Hodgson, having lost 13 of their previous 16. The Eagles will, of course, feel that they should’ve gained all three points against the league leaders, but Luka Milivojevic’s injury-time penalty was saved by Ederson when Zaha was brought down by Raheem Sterling.
Speaking to the Crystal Palace club website, Townsend exalted the Ivorian winger in Palace’s revival: “I can’t speak highly enough of him, he’s been incredible this season.”
“His first game back was our first win, so that pretty much says it all. He’s been terrorising teams week after week in a Palace shirt, and long may that continue.”
“At the start of his return we were playing up front together so it was nice to link up with each other, play one-twos and make runs in behind, and play off each other,” Townsend said.
Palace, and Zaha will be hoping to continue their upturn in form against Southampton on Tuesday. The Eagles will equal the clubs’ Premier League record of five consecutive away matches unbeaten if they can avoid defeat against the Saints.
