# Palace Looking At Signing Southampton Defender

Crystal Palace are considering a move for strong Southampton defender Jose Fonte, sources have told [ESPNFC](https://www.espnfc.com/story/2539790/jose-fonte-targeted-by-crystal-palace-sources).

Eager to find a stronger centre-back partner for Scott Dann, who’s just signed a new long-term deal at the club, Pardew wants the Portuguese defender to add some strength to the back-four.

A second centre-back has been a problem area for Crystal Palace, having been priced out of a move for Swansea and Wales captain Ashley Williams.

Pardew has reportedly been interested in reuniting with Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini at Selhurst Park, but has yet to make a bid for the Argentine.

Palace also tried a move for Hull’s James Chester, but have lost out to West Brom for the £8m-rated Welshman.

The 31-year-old Fonte spent three years at Palace between 2007-10 and made 90 appearances for the club before signing for Southampton, where his impressive performances earned him a place in the Portugal national team.
