# Crystal Palace confirm signing of McCarthy – will he improve the Eagles?

James McCarthy will be a good addition to Crystal Palace’s squad, but doubts remain over his long-term impact.

The midfielder has completed his move to Selhurst Park, with the club’s official website [confirming](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/2019/august/james-mccarthy-joins-crystal-palace) the news on Wednesday night.

McCarthy joins from Everton, hoping to rebuild his career after falling out of favour under Marco Silva.

The 28-year-old’s arrival is an undoubted positive for Palace, with Roy Hodgson looking to bolster his squad ahead of a taxing Premier League season.

Although McCarthy’s stock has fallen in recent times, it is easy play down the quality he possesses.

As a teenager, he was linked with moves to some of the top teams in the country, but he eventually joined Wigan Athletic in order to earn regular playing time.

His box-to-box quality can add another dimension to Palace’s midfield, and despite suffering a broken leg in 2017/18, he still has enough left in the tank to be an influential presence.

There are doubts over McCarthy’s long-term impact because of his injury woes, but in the short-term, he can be an effective figure who helps Palace pull clear of danger.
