# Palace were interested in signing Brownhill in January

Crystal Palace were interested in signing former Bristol City midfielder Josh Brownhill in the January transfer window, according to a report on [the Bristol Post](https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/bristol-city-losing-battle-retain-3778167).

Brownhill ended up signing for fellow Premier League side Burnley in[a £9m deal last month.](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7949701/Josh-Brownhill-joins-Burnley-9m-Bristol-City-striker-Nakhi-Wells-making-reverse-move.html)

The[report reveals](https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/bristol-city-losing-battle-retain-3778167) that several Premier League clubs, including Palace, Leicester City, West Ham United and Sheffield United were all interested in securing his signature before he penned a deal with the Clarets.

Manager Roy Hodgson [recently admitted](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2020/02/02/roy-hodgson-admits-crystal-palace-failed-january-transfer-window/) that Palace’s transfer window was a failure and we believe that this news further confirms that stance.

The Eagles failed to secure any of their top targets, with Brownhill going to Burnley, Jarrod Bowen [joining West Ham](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7954003/Crystal-Palace-suffer-Jarrod-Bowen-Nathan-Ferguson-blow.html), Sander Berge [moving to Sheffield United](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2020/01/30/sheffield-united-sign-sander-berge-club-record-22m-deal/) and Nathan Ferguson [staying at West Brom.](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11706/11922332/nathan-ferguson-crystal-palace-call-off-move-for-west-brom-defender)

Brownhill is a central midfielder with an eye for goals, shown by the fact that he netted [five times in the Championship this season](https://www.transfermarkt.com/josh-brownhill/leistungsdaten/spieler/293569). Therefore, his addition could have been valuable for Palace, who [Hodgson himself has admitted](https://readcrystalpalace.com/2020/02/08/hodgson-bemoans-palaces-lack-of-goals-this-season/) are struggling to score goals.

At only 24-years-old, Brownhill may have been the ideal replacement for the ageing James McArthur, who is[failing to make](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/james-mcarthur/leistungsdaten/spieler/41416) much of an attacking impact this season from midfield.
