# Crystal Palace Open Charlie Cresswell Talks As Maxence Lacroix Decision Looms

**Crystal Palace have opened talks with Charlie Cresswell’s representatives as the club sharpen their defensive planning around Maxence Lacroix’s uncertain summer.**

The [Evening Standard reports](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/crystal-palace-transfer-news-cresswell-b1288052.html) that Palace have made the first move for the Toulouse centre-back, while [Get French Football News has relayed](https://www.getfootballnewsfrance.com/2026/crystal-palace-target-charlie-cresswell-favours-premier-league-return/) that the 23-year-old would favour a Premier League return if he leaves France.

## Pierre Sage Gets A Clear Defensive Succession Call

This is not a speculative name plucked from a longlist. [FotMob records](https://www.fotmob.com/en-GB/players/1186444/charlie-cresswell) Cresswell as playing 2,533 Ligue 1 minutes for Toulouse in 2025/26, scoring three goals and adding two assists.

That workload matters for Palace because Pierre Sage needs defenders ready to handle a European calendar, not just development minutes.

The urgency is obvious. Chelsea have been credited with talks for Lacroix, with recent reports placing the Frenchman among their leading defensive targets. [Read Crystal Palace has already analysed why Palace need to prepare a Lacroix succession plan rather than react late](https://readcrystalpalace.com/2026/06/27/crystal-palace-transfer-charlie-cresswell-lacroix-replacement/).

Cresswell would fit the logic. He is young enough to retain resale value, already established enough to avoid being treated as a long-term project, and physically suited to a Premier League return.

For Palace, the key is speed. If Chelsea accelerate for Lacroix, Sage needs leverage on two fronts: a credible replacement track and a defender who does not require a full tactical reset.

Cresswell may not be the only option, but the early talks show Palace understand the danger of waiting.
