## Joel Ward Leaves Swansea City as Short-Term Deal Expires

Joel Ward has left Swansea City after his short-term contract at the Championship club expired, head coach Vitor Matos has confirmed. The versatile former Crystal Palace defender joined the Swans in January for the remainder of the 2025-26 season, but has now departed as a free agent to bring a brief spell in South Wales to a close.

## Joel Ward departs after short Swansea stay

Ward made 16 appearances across all competitions for Swansea in the second half of last season, though only three of those were starts. The Championship club held talks over extending his stay once the campaign ended, but opted against fresh terms. Still revered by supporters after his long service at Selhurst Park, Ward was part of the squad that lifted the club’s first major trophy — [Joel Ward reflected on Crystal Palace’s FA Cup triumph](https://readcrystalpalace.com/2026/05/17/joel-ward-on-crystal-palaces-incredible-fa-cup-triumph-football-news/) in the aftermath of that Wembley win. [BBC Sport](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c1j18lkx9dko) carried Matos’s confirmation of the exit.

> “Joel was really important for us character-wise last season. He came in during a moment of the season where we were really in need of someone with his experience and leadership. He could cover more than one position as well. This season, we decided that we can go in different directions.”

Matos was warm in his farewell, backing Ward to “have a brilliant future” in whatever he chooses to do next, in or out of the game. For now, one of the most dependable servants of Palace’s recent Premier League era is weighing up his options as a free agent.
