EFL Trophy Recap: Experienced Plymouth Outclass Young Eagles 5-1

Crystal Palace Under-21s crashed back down to earth on Tuesday evening as a sharp, experienced Plymouth Argyle side handed Darren Powell’s team a 5-1 defeat at Home Park in the EFL Trophy.

The official Crystal Palace website provided full match details after the whistle, highlighting a night where sheer effort collided head-on with Senior League quality and a couple of brutal refereeing calls.

Palace arrived in Devon missing key figures through international duty and injury, yet they controlled the opening minutes with crisp, patient passing. However, Plymouth quickly turned the tide. Xavier Amaechi smashed a breathtaking long-range strike past Harry Lee to open the scoring, setting the tone for a relentless night.

To make matters worse, two controversial first-half goals gave Powell’s young side a mountain to climb. Caleb Watts doubled Plymouth’s lead on 26 minutes despite strong Palace appeals for offside, before Watts added his second via a heavy deflection shortly before the break. Both decisions went against the Young Eagles, leaving them three down at half-time despite playing plenty of good football.

Donte Martin gave Palace a lifeline in the 57th minute, looping an expert header past James Storer after Adler Nascimento set him up in the box. But Plymouth responded like seasoned pros. Seb Campbell squeezed a fourth over the line despite Lee’s best efforts, and Bim Pepple capped off the scoring late on to put the game completely out of reach.

Goalkeeper Harry Lee pulled off a string of outstanding saves across both halves to keep the scoreline from getting completely out of hand, proving once again why he remains one of the academy’s brightest talents.

Palace now sit third in Southern Group E with three points. The knockout stages remain within reach, but the Young Eagles must beat Newport County away on November 3rd to keep their Trophy campaign alive.
