When a season is teetering on the edge, the very last thing a struggling manager needs is a controversial 13th-minute red card taking away his primary attacking focal point. Yet, that is precisely the nightmare scenario Pierre Sage found himself confronting at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.
Crystal Palace have officially lodged an appeal against the red card awarded to Jean-Philippe Mateta during their 2-0 defeat to Tottenham.
Mateta was sent off early in the first half following a VAR intervention for a studs-up challenge on Micky van de Ven as the pair contested a loose ball in transition. Referee Michael Oliver originally awarded Mateta a yellow card on the pitch, but upgraded his decision to a straight red after being instructed to inspect the incident on the pitch-side monitor.
Down to 10 men for over 75 minutes, Palace were unable to stem the tide, with Spurs capitalizing on their numerical advantage to secure a comfortable victory thanks to goals in either half from Archie Gray and Jan Paul van Hecke.
Accidental Contact or Excessive Force?
During the match, Oliver explained his upgraded decision over the stadium public address system, deeming the 29-year-old forward to have used “full forceful contact” as he landed on top of Van de Ven’s right ankle with his studs up while chasing a pass into space.
Palace’s hierarchy, however, view the decision as harsh and disproportionate. The Eagles argue that Mateta’s challenge was entirely accidental, maintaining that the French international had his eyes fixed strictly on the ball and did not see Van de Ven closing in from his blind side.
Mateta currently faces a mandatory three-match domestic suspension. Palace are hopeful that the Independent Regulatory Commission will either overturn the red card altogether or reduce the severity of the ban upon reviewing the evidence.
What Mateta’s Ban Means for Palace’s Crucial Domestic Run
For Pierre Sage who is under mounting pressure following three straight Premier League defeats losing Mateta comes at the absolute worst possible time. The manager has only recently welcomed his star striker back into the starting XI following a frustrating hamstring injury and desperately requires his physical presence at the top end of the pitch.
If the three-match ban is upheld, Mateta will miss:
- Liverpool (H): A daunting Premier League clash at Selhurst Park this weekend.
- Coventry City (A): A high-stakes league encounter against the newly promoted side.
- Hull City (H): A crucial domestic fixture where points are non-negotiable for Palace’s survival campaign.
There is, however, one silver lining for Sage on the selection front: domestic suspensions do not carry over into UEFA competitions. Mateta remains fully available for selection when Palace host Hoffenheim and Real Sociedad in their upcoming Europa League group fixtures.
For Eagles supporters, watching the initial yellow card get upgraded felt like yet another decision going against a team already down on its luck. While nobody wants to see dangerous tackles in the game, context and intent ought to matter Mateta was competing for space, tracking the flight of the ball, and attempting to establish position.
Heading into a weekend showdown against Liverpool without your main talisman would leave Sage with a massive tactical void to fill. As the FA prepares to hear Palace’s case, everyone connected with L25 will be desperately hoping that reason prevails giving Sage full strength to fight for his future.
