Today the club confirmed that Andrew “AJ” Johnson has been released from the club following the conclusion of his 6 month contract. 33 year old Johnson signed for the club on a free transfer in early September in a bid to gain match fitness and challenge for a first team place. Johnson was named in the 25 man Premier League squad and offered the chance to work with the young strikers at the club to pass on some of his experience and knowledge.
AJ made just one first team appearance in his second spell at the club, climbing off the bench in the League Cup game against Newcastle, with Palace eventually losing the game 3-2. Johnson was on hand to congratulate Sullay KaiKai on his debut goal for the club and celebrate in the Red n’ Blue once more in front of the Holmesdale at Selhurst Park. Johnson managed to register a goal in his fight for match fitness in a development squad friendly against Coventry City at the Ricoh.
Injuries have meant that Johnson was unable to build up sufficient match fitness to ever properly challenge for a place in the side and he is now free to look for a new club.
