Former Crystal Palace striker Andy Johnson has returned to the club, it has been announced today, for a third spell at Selhurst Park.
The 35-year-old who made 161 appearances over two spells at the club has undertaken a non-playing role after being named as an ambassador of the club, seeing him take hold of a number of roles including working with players within the academy.
Johnson’s last spell at Selhurst Park saw him make just the one appearance from the bench when former manager Neil Warnock signed the veteran striker on a free transfer, after his contract expired at QPR.
Speaking to the official website after the news was announced, Johnson said:
It’s my third spell here so I’m delighted to be back and massive thanks to the Chairman and Phil Alexander for keeping me in their minds and asking me back to be part of the club.
The role will see me involved in a number of different ways, it involves mentoring with some of the academy players, working in the community, matchdays, corporate events, team events, there’s quite a lot to be getting involved with and cannot wait to get started.
The former striker is seen as a hero by a number of Palace fans after his main spell at the club between 2002-2005, most remembered for his hat-trick in a 5-0 win over Brighton shortly after his arrival at the club as well as the game after at Walsall in which he scored another three.
