Crystal Palace have this evening confirmed that goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has joined Southampton for an undisclosed fee.
The 26-year-old who had been at the club for a year after joining the club last summer from QPR made his debut against Norwich City on the opening day of the season and went on to make seven further appearances throughout the season.
He was limited to only a small amount of appearances last season due to the high quality competition within the club with Wales international Wayne Hennessey holding onto the number one jersey for the longest period last season, with Julian Speroni only making a handful of appearances.
Competition has increased at the club for the upcoming season with Steve Mandanda joining from Marseille last month on a free transfer, who will seemingly fight against Hennessey and Speroni for the space between the sticks.
McCarthy went onto Twitter this evening to thank fans and the club for their support over the last year with the atmosphere being one thing that he will fondly remember.
Twitter: Shame it didn’t work out at Palace but I will have fond memories of the incredible atmosphere. Good luck to everyone involved at the club! (@Alex_Macca23)
