Bringing in a defender or two is definitely on Sam Allardyce’s agenda this month, but he can add another player to the ‘missed out on’ pile.

According to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, Crystal Palace made an eleventh hour bid to re-sign Southampton captain Jose Fonte yesterday but the veteran defender had already agreed a move to West Ham.
The Eagles signed the 33-year-old centre-back in the summer of 2007 and Fonte went on to make 92 appearances for the club in two-and-a-half-years at the club, scoring six times before joining Southampton in a £1.2m deal in January 2010.

Fonte has spent the last 2010 years at St. Mary’s but he handed in a transfer request at the start of the January window and is having a medical today ahead of a move to London rivals West Ham for a reported £8m.
Allardyce has already missed out on one defender in Carl Jenkinson this week after the right-back failed to agree personal terms with the club, but he’s not giving up that easily as he eyes a move for Sunderland’s Patrick van Aanholt.
