Arsene Wenger has revealed the reason why Carl Jenkinson’s Arsenal exit has stalled – the player’s wage demands.
In an interview published in the Daily Mirror, Wenger fielded questions on why Jenkinson’s proposed move to Crystal Palace broke down and the Frenchman spared no punches with his answer.
“Only he has to agree personal terms but at the moment he has not managed to do that,” Wenger said.
Sam Allardyce hoped to reunite with the former West Ham loanee this month and agreed a £7million fee with Arsenal for his services. However, Jenkinson’s demands – coupled with Crystal Palace’s strict wage structure – resulted in the deal collapsing after weeks of negotiations.
Allardyce recently commented on the Jenkinson situation, insisting the deal is ‘still ongoing’ in his eyes. He said: “Until the chairman rings me up and says the Carl Jenkinson deal is dead, it is still ongoing for me.”
The 24-year-old has made a total of 62 appearances since signing for Arsenal in 2011 – scoring once and assisting five times in the process.
