Crystal Palace striker Connor Wickham has admitted that it was a relief to score his first goal in over two years in Crystal Palace’s FA Cup victory over Tottenham at the weekend, South London Press & Mercury reports.
Wickham suffered an horrific injury back in November 2016 against Swansea City and had not started a game for Crystal Palace in over two years.
The FA Cup victory over Tottenham at the weekend was the 25-year-old’s first start for Palace since that injury two seasons ago and it took him just nine minutes to get himself on the score sheet.
The striker also played a key part in earning Palace’s penalty against Spurs as his presence in the box left Kyle Walker-Peters off-guard and conceding a hand-ball.
Wickham spoke of the delight he felt at having got that first goal under his belt since his return from the sidelines.
It was a massive relief.
We got ourselves in the lead which was good and we were saying at half time that it could have been 4-0 if we took our chances and were clinical in the end, but I think the performance was as professional as it could have been from start to finish.
Wickham went on to state that he is hopeful that his side can reach the FA Cup final like they did back in 2015/16 under then-manager Alan Pardew.
I think we’ve definitely got the squad to do it [go on a Cup run], we showed that, we made a few changes but whoever the gaffer decides to put on the field can definitely put in a performance.
It’s good, it’s not just Wilf and Andros, we can all share the load. We’ve got Jordan [Ayew], Christian [Benteke] has just come back and myself, we look strong all the way from the back to the front.
