Crystal Palace set to sign Cahill – could he keep them up?

Crystal Palace are set to sign free agent Gary Cahill after winning the race for his signature.

According to Daily Telegraph journalist Matt Law, Palace will sign Cahill in the coming days.

Although the transfer window officially closes on Thursday at 5pm, Palace are in no rush to announce the deal as the defender is a free agent and can be signed at any point.

Cahill is one of the most, if not the most, experienced Premier League centre-backs still playing.

The 33-year-old has played almost 400 games in the English top-flight and has won almost everything there is to win, picking up Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, League Cup and FA Cup trophies during his time at Chelsea.

Palace struggled with injuries at the back last season, with Mamadou Sakho, James Tomkins and Scott Dann all missing at different points during the campaign, so bringing in a centre-back will come as a huge boost to Roy Hodgson.

Can Cahill keep Palace in the Premier League? If he is able to stay fit and hit his stride, yes. The defender has undoubted quality, that is backed up by the masses of trophies he has collected over the years, and would give Palace a huge chance of keeping their place in the division.
