Having joined Crystal Palace on a three-year deal in the closing days of July, Jordan Ayew has already been making waves.
The now-permanent Palace signing deservedly won the Man of the Match award, as voted for by the fans, on account of his phenomenal work rate that culminated in close chances against Everton last weekend.
Whilst failing to find the back of the Everton net, the team’s overall good form undoubtedly buoyed the Palace frontman and provided amble opportunities for a good offensive display.
Should Palace fans be collectively bracing themselves for a red-and-blue storm of goals to be heading their way?
If Palace’s 2019-20 season opener against Everton is anything to go by, then it serves as a fine testament to Ayew’s true capabilities.
Whilst only managing to score twice across all competitions under his loan spell from Swansea City – including an inspired headed goal against Grimsby Town in the FA cup – last term, Ayew has still nonetheless exhibited a vast repertoire of skills.
It is entirely forgivable to feel critical towards a lack of goals from Ayew, but there may still be a scoring onslaught to come. Ayew instinctively knew how to scare defenders; his strike just wide of the post against Everton perhaps best summarises his recent woes.
Fair praise must be awarded for his ability to find space, scare defenders and have good on-target shots.
In optimistic spirit, Palace fans should best look ahead to the first Crystal Palace game of the season on the road; a Sunday visit to Bramall Lane pits the Eagles against a hardened, newly-promoted Sheffield United with a squad largely unbaptised in Premier League football.
Given his impressive displays, there is an apt chance that Ayew could indeed lead the Palace line once more.
Scoring an impressive 11 goals across all competitions for Swansea City in the 2017-18 season before signing on for the Eagles, there is every chance that Ayew will have a prime opportunity to showcase the attacking flair and true grit that mark his performances.
Will he score at the weekend? Only time, effort and a touch of clinical finishing will tell.
