Data suggests Palace enjoyed a “good” summer – but did they really?

Despite Aaron-Wan Bissaka joining Manchester United during the transfer window, Crystal Palace’s summer has seen good outweigh bad.

According to BBC Sport, “investment company Carteret Analytics think they have found a formula for footballers, and even use their system to advise three Premier League clubs on potential new signings.”

The data helps determine whether or not the 20 Premier League teams enjoyed a productive summer individually, with Palace’s business deduced as “pretty good”.

At one point during the transfer window, it was wholly understandable why Eagles supporters were downbeat about what was going on.

Having lost up-and-coming youngster Wan-Bissaka to United, star man Wilfried Zaha also looked set to leave the club, with Everton close to signing him.

The Ivorian ended up staying put, though, and his attitude has since been praised by Roy Hodgson.

Zaha remaining at Selhurst Park is undoubtedly vital to Palace’s summer being considered a successful one, but the permanent signing of Jordan Ayew was also key, due to the £2.5 million fee being “well below his intrinsic value.”

Add to that signings of Gary Cahill, James McCarthy and Victor Camarasa, and Palace’s summer that ended up going smoothly.
