Crystal Palace crashed out of the Carabao Cup on penalties against Colchester United, after playing out a drab 0-0 draw in normal time.
Andros Townsend missed his penalty in the shootout that proved to be costly for the Eagles.
Coming back to the game, despite making 10 changes to the side that defeated Manchester United, Roy Hodgson fielded seven internationals in his XI who were expected to do the job.
Christian Benteke had two good chances early on, but the first one was saved by Dean Gerken, before the Belgian hit the post few minutes later.
Just as when things looked very monotonous for the home side, Hodgson brought Jordan Ayew and Wilfried Zaha on to instil more threat in the final third.
But Colchester held their own while defending and limited Palace to only four shots on target in 90 minutes.
When it went to penalties, Townsend’s miss enabled the U’s to win the shootout 5-4 and progress into the next round.
