Aston Villa reportedly decided against signing Gary Cahill over the summer, with Dean Smith deciding on other options according to the Athletic.
Cahill, who eventually signed for Palace on a two-year deal, was a target for Villa over the window.
Villa assistant boss John Terry gave a glowing character statement about his former teammate to the club, but Villa decided against a deal.
Signing Cahill would have made him the highest earner at the club, with Cahill being on a reported £80,000 a week.
Villa also wanted a younger squad, choosing to sign Tyrone Mings and Bjorn Engels instead.
