Crystal Palace did not agree a permanent deal to sign Cenk Tosun at the end of his loan spell from Everton, which could be a big let-off for the club.
According to the printed edition of the Mirror, as transcribed by HITC, Palace never intended to sign Tosun permanently in the summer and did not have an option-to-buy as part of the deal.
Tosun joined Palace on loan from Everton in the January transfer window but has already seen his season ended after suffering an ACL injury. The forward is set to have surgery this month and is facing a long spell on the sidelines, ending his Palace career.
This update on the details of his loan move, with no permanent deal in place, could be a huge let-off for Palace. Not only will Tosun potentially be out for the start of next season, but he also struggled to impress in the few appearances he did make for Palace.
Tosun scored once in five games for Palace, averaging a dismal WhoScored rating of 6.47. This suggests that he was not having the desired impact up top following his loan move to Selhurst Park and may have been a bad signing if the club had agreed a permanent deal for him.
However, this now appears unlikely given this update and his current injury, allowing Palace to, perhaps, look at other strikers in the summer window.
Palace could, instead, eye up a younger striker with pace who could add something different to the squad. Christian Benteke offers height and physicality, whilst Ayew is skilful and good in the build-up, but Palace do not really possess a forward who can outpace defenders and stretch the play.
