Crystal Palace are reportedly keeping tabs on Spezia centre-back Martin Erlic as they weigh up a potential summer swoop for the defender.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, as transcribed by Sport Witness, Palace and fellow Premier League side Southampton have been impressed with Erlic’s performances in Serie B.
Signing Erlic could provide the youthful injection of energy that I feel Palace need in their squad next season. The current squad is built around experienced professionals who Roy Hodgson can rely on, but they will likely need to add some younger prospects to the group to keep things fresh.
Palace’s youngest centre-back is Martin Kelly, 29, although he has mainly played at right-back. Of the mainstays at centre-back, the youngest is 30-year-old Mamadou Sakho.
Erlic is only 22 and has been a regular for Spezia in the Serie B this season, with Palace reportedly seeing “Premier League quality” in his performances.
Bringing in a young, promising defender to learn from the current crop of players seems like a wise move for the Eagles and Erlic seemingly fits the bill.
