The Eagles had already paid their third-highest ever transfer fee to QPR in order to sign their talisman, Eberechi Eze, who joined Roy Hodgson’s side on a five-year deal on Friday.
With the ink barely dry on Eze’s contract, it now looks as though the Palace hierarchy have wasted no time in recruiting additional young, hungry talent to their ranks with Gallagher said to have undergone a medical on Sunday.
The Chelsea prospect, who impressed in the Championship with Swansea and south London rivals Charlton, now looks set to make the step up to the top division of English football.
Gallagher will join on an initial season-long loan, although the report indicates there is no option to buy.
Should Gallagher impress on loan, Chelsea have insured themselves as a result; Palace will join any other prospective suitor in having to match Chelsea’s fee demands and are reliant on Chelsea’s willingness to let Gallagher leave in the first place.
Other Premier League rivals, such as Fulham and Leeds, were also interested in the young dynamo. Chelsea were keen to offer Premier League experience to Gallagher, with Chelsea having good relations with their London neighbours.
The Blues had already seen the likes of Michy Batshuayi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek enjoy fruitful and impactful loan spells in SE25, and believe that the Eagles can aid Gallagher’s development in a similar manner.
Gallagher has been training with the Chelsea first-team squad since the beginning of pre-season and made an appearance in the second half of their friendly on Saturday at Brighton.
