- Will Hughes hailed Crystal Palace star
- Eagles squad think he’s ‘underrated’
- Chasing records
Will Hughes has given a glowing verdict of a Crystal Palace teammate and feels they are “underrated in world football.” The English midfielder plays alongside several exciting talents who can change a game in the blink of an eye.
One of those is Ismaila Sarr, who this season continues to enjoy a stellar spell at Selhurst Park. The Senegalese winger joined the club back in August 2024 from French side Marseille for £12.7m.
Sarr has been outstanding this term, posting 15 goals and two assists in 32 games across competitions. He added two goals to that tally in a 2-1 win over AEK Larnaca, which sealed the Eagles’ place in the quarter finals of the Europa Conference League.
‘Phenomenal’ – Hughes Hypes Up Sarr
Sarr’s consistency has been hugely impressive, taking games by the scruff of the neck. His displays are proving decisive in the Conference League and he will have played a key role in winning the trophy if the South Londoners prevail come May 27th.
Hughes made sure to give Sarr his flowers during a recent interview with the club’s media team. He said:
“We’re just speaking about this in the changing room. A couple of lads said he’s [Sarr] phenomenal. He’s so underrated.”
Sarr was part of the Senegal team that won the African Cup of Nations earlier this year. Hughes alluded to this:
“Not only in our team I think, but in football in general. What he produces week in, week out, over a number of years now. It’s been incredible really.”
Hughes isn’t the only Palace star to speak highly of Sarr as Adam Wharton waxed lyrical following the Larnaca win. He has come to the fore time and again, and the fee for his services has proven a bargain.
Surprise Sarr Statistic
Sarr is Palace’s top scorer this season, and he’s not far off eclipsing Jean-Philippe Mateta’s best goalscoring campaign. He’s just four goals shy of the Frenchman’s record tally of 17 goals in 46 games across competitions during the 2024-25 season.
It speaks volumes about the Senegalese attacker’s consistency and clinical finishing. He has become Oliver Glasner’s talisman this season, including in the Conference League.
Sarr has bagged five goals in eight games during the Eagles’ debut European campaign. He sits joint ninth in the goalscoring ranks, and could close the gap on those ahead of him should his side progress further in the competition.
