- Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton left England
- The young midfielder sustained a knock
- Other Palace players representing their nations
Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton’s withdrawal from the England camp has raised concerns about his fitness ahead of the Europa Conference League quarter-finals. The young Eagles star was forced to pull out of international duty after sustaining a knock.
Wharton came on in the second half of a 1-1 draw against Uruguay on Friday. He finished the friendly game but appears to have picked up an issue which led to him leaving Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
The 22-year-old returned to Palace, and the hope was that this was just a precaution. He has a Conference League quarter-final first-leg clash against Fiorentina on April 9th to prepare for.
Wharton Worries Allayed
Wharton has been a crucial player for Oliver Glasner and the Eagles’ Conference League campaign. He’s appeared in all but one of their European debut.
Fortunately, it looks likely that Glasner will have him available for the encounter with Fiorentina at Selhurst Park. SunSport’s Jack Rosser responded to the player’s withdrawal from Tuchel’s squad and wrote on X:
“Told Adam Wharton’s knock is nothing too serious.”
Tuchel has reduced his 35-man squad down to 27 players ahead of England’s friendly against Japan next Tuesday. Wharton is one of eight to drop out, with Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, John Stones, Noni Madueke, Aaron Ramsdale, Fikayo Tomori and Dominic Solanke also returning to their clubs.
Wharton earned his fourth cap in the draw against Uruguay. He put in an impressive 45-minute display at Wembley.
Wharton’s Palace Teammates Impress
Palace have been well represented during the international break, which continues this week. The Eagles are the third-highest club with their players in action for their nations across Europe’s top five leagues.
Wharton recently hailed Ismaila Sarr, and he’s not just delivering at club level but also for Senegal. He was on target in a 2-0 win over Peru on Saturday.
Evan Guessand was also on the scoresheet for the Ivory Coast in a 4-0 victory over South Korea. Other members of Glasner’s squad who have earned caps for their countries include Maxence Lacroix, who made his France debut, and Jorgen Strand Larsen of Norway.
Glasner will be eager for all his players called up for international duty to return fit for the final stretch of the season. His side remain focused on winning the Conference League and will want to finish the Premier League campaign strongly.
