- Crystal Palace need to replace Glasner
- Eddie Howe’s Newcastle future in doubt
- English coach ticks boxes for the Eagles
Crystal Palace have potentially been handed a golden opportunity to appoint Eddie Howe as Oliver Glasner’s replacement. The Newcastle United manager is losing the backing of his board following a dismal derby defeat to Sunderland.
Howe has been one of the most highly-rated tacticians in English football for several years. He ended the Magpies’ 70-year wait for a major trophy when he led them to the Carabao Cup last season.
This campaign has been in stark contrast to the heights of that Wembley triumph. His side have faltered, languishing 12th in the Premier League table and out of all cup competitions.
Crystal Palace Handed Howe Chance
Howe’s future is set to be decided at the end of the season, but speculation is growing over a possible dismissal. He’s been in charge at St James’ Park since November 2021, overseeing 114 wins in 224 games.
According to MailSport, there are doubts over the Englishman remaining at the club come August. He and the club will “re-assess the situation at the end of the season.”
Should Howe be relieved of his duties, he’ll become arguably one of the most highly sought-after coaches in England. His success on Tyneside makes him an extremely appealing appointment and Palace would be in with a shout.
When the 48-year-old took over Newcastle, they were embroiled in a relegation battle. He was tasked with guiding them out of a difficult period, but overachieved by propelling them into the Champions League race.
Palace find themselves mid-table but competing in Europe thanks to their FA Cup win last season. The chance to continue managing in the Premier League and at a club with less uncertainty might appeal to the former Bournemouth boss.
“Love The Way He Manages” – Howe has Glasner’s Approval
Glasner will leave Palace in June, when his contract expires, having become the most successful manager in the club’s history. By the time the Austrian departs, he might have even led the Eagles to the Europa Conference League trophy.
Howe was held in similar regard at Newcastle last season. But his team’s struggles this term have led to a large section of the Toon Army calling for him to be sacked.
Glasner spoke highly of Howe when the two sides met in April last year. He told club media:
“I love the way he manages his teams. I also followed him when he managed Bournemouth and now it’s Newcastle. The intensity they’re playing, the passion they’re playing, the enthusiasm they’re playing, the quality they have. The structure, how quickly forward they play.”
Howe could yet stay at Newcastle, although it’s expected that several star players will depart without Champions League football. If he does leave, he’d be an ideal replacement for Glasner.
