- Crystal Palace boss Glasner is leaving
- Bayer Leverkusen eyeing him
- The Austrian thought to prefer a Premier League job
Oliver Glasner could return to Germany when his contract with Crystal Palace expires in June. The Austrian is leaving Selhurst Park and his next job might be in the Bundesliga.
According to Sport BILD, Bayer Leverkusen have Glasner on their managerial shortlist. It is expected that the German outfit will part ways with current manager Kasper Hjulmand.
If Glasner were to replace the Dane, he’d be managing in the German top-flight again. He previously coached VfL Wolfsburg and Mainz before arriving at Selhurst Park in February 2024.
Glasner Wants Premier League Stay
Glasner was linked with several English clubs as soon as he announced his intentions to leave at the end of the season. Tottenham Hotspur were thought to be admirers but their precarious situation has seen them turn to Roberto De Zerbi on a hefty five-year contract.
Manchester United have still to decide whether to keep Michael Carrick in charge. The English coach is contracted to the Red Devils until the end of the season, but is in pole position to land the job permanently.
Spurs won’t be appointing Glasner, and United seem extremely unlikely to do so. That doesn’t mean he won’t remain in the Premier League.
The prior report claims that although Leverkusen are interested in the Eagles boss, he prefers a move within the English top-flight. It’s an interesting revelation because there aren’t many top clubs on the lookout for a new coach.
One possibility could be Newcastle United, as Eddie Howe is coming under increasing pressure. The Magpies are reportedly set to make a decision over his future at the end of the season.
Leverkusen could instead turn to Fabian Hurzeler. It’s believed that talks are set to take place between the Brighton & Hove Albion manager and the Bundesliga club.
Glasner on His Future Plans
Glasner will be eager to end his Palace reign by guiding the club to its first-ever European trophy. His troops are in the Europa Conference League quarter-finals, facing Fiorentina, with the first leg on April 9th.
The Austrian will no longer be in charge at Selhurst Park come the end of June. talkSPORT asked him whether he intended to stay in the Premier League:
“To be honest, I don’t know right now. For me, it’s really the focus on having a great end to the season. We still have a lot to achieve. We’re not too far away from the European places in the Premier League. We’re in the quarter-final of a European competition.“
He added:
“So now we’re entering crunch time and we have to have the players fit. And so I’m really 100 per cent focused on the end of the season.”
Glasner has overseen 48 wins in 108 games as Palace manager, including last season’s FA Cup final victory against Manchester City. He will leave as the club’s most successful coach in history.
