- Crystal Palace held by West Ham
- Brennan Johnson missed biggest chance of game
- Jamie Carragher pointed out Tottenham frustration
Jamie Carragher reacted to Brennan Johnson’s glaring miss in Crystal Palace’s 0-0 draw against West Ham United by suggesting he’ll have frustrated Tottenham Hotspur. The Welsh attacker endured a difficult night where nothing quite went right for him.
Johnson was presented with a golden opportunity to put the Eagles ahead in the first half. He had plenty of time to head home from close range, but directed his header wide of Mads Hermansen’s post.
It was another dissapointing display from the 24-year-old who has struggled to impress since arriving from Spurs for £35m in January. He’s without a goal and only has two assists in 19 games across competitions.
‘A Tottenham Legend’ – Carragher on Johnson
Johnson could have bagged himself a first goal in Palace colours, but he’s clearly lacking confidence. He is yet to live up to expectations, and Carragher feels he blew a chance to hand his former club a lifeline in the relegation battle.
Carragher said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football:
“It wasn’t just for Crystal Palace this; you can imagine Tottenham fans watching this, and he is a Tottenham legend for what he did in the Europa League final. But he had a chance there to become an even bigger legend for Tottenham because they will be watching this with bated breath. But it was a poor finish.”
Johnson lasted 78 minutes before he was brought off for Justin Devanney. He had two shots, including the one big miss, won just one of five ground duels and couldn’t find his man with his one attempted cross.
‘Everything That Could Have Gone Wrong’
Johnson’s miss was probably the biggest talking point of the game as it was a rather dull stalemate on reflection. The Welshman needed to put in a positive performance but there are still huge concerns over his start at Selhurst Park.
Arsenal legend Alan Smith pointed out Johnson’s difficult period when analysing the miss. He said:
“It’s fallen to the wrong man. A player low in confidence.”
Johnson then picked up a yellow card moments later of which Smith added:
“Yeah, pretty much everything that could have gone wrong has for Brennan Johnson.”
Johnson arrived at Palace with huge expectations, albeit leaving Spurs in disarray. He scored one of the most important goals in the Lilywhites’ history in a 1-0 win over Manchester United in last season’s Europa League final.
When he has been given a chance to prove his worth, he’s faltered. That was the case again tonight, with Glasner resting Ismaila Sarr.
