- Crystal Palace add Ruben Amorim to shortlist
- Frank Lampard still on Eagles’ radar
- Eagles U18’s face Manchester United in final
Crystal Palace seem to be stepping up its search for an Oliver Glasner successor despite Andoni Iraola clearly emerging as the ideal candidate. There were even reports in Spain last week that suggested the Eagles had presented the Bournemouth boss with an offer.
David Ornstein has since confirmed Palace’s interest in Iraola, but it might be far-fetched to suggest a deal is close. That’s because other names are still in the mix to replace the greatest manager in the club’s history.
Before that, Glasner will be hoping to guide his side to UEFA Conference League glory. He might also be watching the U18’s look to get revenge on Manchester United tonight.
Palace Weigh Up Amorim
One of the biggest surprise names to emerge as a potential Glasner successor is Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese coach has been out of management since January after he was sacked by Manchester United.
Amorim endured a difficult 14-year reign at Old Trafford, overseeing the Red Devils’ worst Premier League finish (15th). But he was one of Europe’s most highly-admired coaches before the events that unfolded at the Theatre of Dreams.
The 41-year-old may have a point to prove in English football, and Selhurst Park is often a home for individuals looking for a second chance. It seems unlikely but his three-a-the-back system could suit Glasner’s squad.
Lampard Still in Contention
There have been various reports suggesting Frank Lampard will snub any chance to leave Coventry City. The Chelsea legend has led the Sky Blues to Premier League promotion.
But Lampard is said to “really intrigue” Steve Parish and the board. The 47-year-old has turned his managerial career around at Coventry Building Society Arena.
Palace can present him with an exciting project and potentially the chance to return to management in Europe next season. But the chance to manage Coventry in the top-flight might just be difficult to resist.
Palace U18’s Cup Final
The young Eagles will be in action tonight when they face United in the Premier League Cup final tonight. They are licking their wounds following a 2-1 loss (AET) against the Red Devils in the FA Youth Cup semi-finals last week.
Javier Alonso is excited for the game, which takes place at Selhurst Park. He said ahead of the encounter:
“It’s amazing for us and the academy, especially as it’s at Selhurst Park. It’s the first time we’ve played in the final and we can’t wait – it means everything.“
Reaching the final is a true reflection of just how much work is being done in the academy. It’s fair to say the South Londoners’ future is bright with or without a trophy won tonight.
