  • Ruben Amorim linked with Crystal Palace
  • Eagles thought to be eyeing him as Oliver Glasner replacement
  • Fans in two minds over Portuguese coach

The possibility of Ruben Amorim replacing Oliver Glasner at Crystal Palace has divided opinion amongst fans. The former Manchester United coach recently emerged as a potential candidate to succeed the Austrian.

Reports claim that Palace have spoken internally about Amorim, and the Portuguese tactician is under consideration. He is available after being sacked by United in January, ending a disastrous 14-month reign.

Amorim arrived at Old Trafford in November 2024 with his stock sky high as one of the most promising young coaches in the game. But by the time he was dismissed by the Red Devils his reputation had been torn to shreds.

Palace Could Turn to Amorim

Amorim oversaw 25 wins and 23 defeats in 63 games in charge at United. But there was more to the story than poor records being broken and a 15th-placed finish in the 2024-25 campaign.

The former Sporting CP boss clashed with the higher-ups, feeling as though he wasn’t allowed to manage the club. His sacking stemmed more from his untenable relationship with INEOS rather than his performance in the dugout.

If Palace were to move for Amorim, it could give him a second chance to prove himself in the Premier League. There are some similarities between the 41-year-old and Glasner as both use three-at-the-back systems.

Palace Fans Divided Over Amorim

Fans have reacted intriguingly to the report relayed by Read Crystal Palace linking Amorim to the job. Some feel it would be the wrong decision given his tumultuous spell in Manchester.

One fan predicted a possible relegation scrap: “No way I think might relegated from the Premiership.”

Another added: “He stank at Man U & I am surprised that he lasted as long as he did before they sacked him.”

One wrote: “No don’t want him at Palace.”

Another drew comparisons with Roy Hodgson: “NO THANK YOU he is like RH has a plan and sticks by it whatever the situation is.”

One added: “DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN DEFINITELY RELAGATION.”

That said, some Palace supporters think he could be a solid appointment and that he could fare well at Selhurst Park.

That was the verdict of one fan: “Palace is more his level! Think he would be ok.”

Another added: “I reckon he’d be ok…. Similar style, and set up to Oliver Glasner’s. Players being used to that style and similar tactics would hit the ground running if Amorim came in. I thought that when OG said he was going that Amorim would be a good replacement… Still do…”

One said: “Similar philosophy to OG…which may work….imo this philosophy is too rigid and we need a manager who is more flexible and can play a variety of …3-4-3…4-3-3 …and 4-4-2… Depending on the opposition…we have the playing staff to do that.”

Amorim was a success at Sporting, winning two Liga Portugal titles and it wasn’t only the Red side of Manchester eyeing him. He was linked with Manchester City as a potential Pep Guardiola successor before accepting the United job in winter 2024.
