Why Crystal Palace Could Give Sacked Chelsea Manager Quick Premier League Return

Crystal Palace are still searching for an Oliver Glasner successor and Liam Rosenior has emerged as a possible candidate. The English coach was only sacked by Chelsea three days ago after a disastrous reign at Stamford Bridge.

Rosenior ultimately failed during his three months in charge of the west Londoners but most knew the job was asking way too much of the 41-year-old. A short spell with their co-owned club, Strasbourg, led BlueCo to turn to him after sacking Enzo Maresca.

The former Hull City boss had impressed in France, guiding Strasbourg to UEFA Conference League qualification. He even beat Palace earlier this season, overseeing a 2-1 win against Glasner’s Eagles during the European competition’s league phase.

Crystal Palace Admire Liam Rosenior

According to Callum O’Connell of Football Insider, Rosenior caught the eye of Palace higher-ups after that match. It would appear that they retain admiration of him despite his Chelsea troubles.

He said:

“It is interesting, because with the Palace links, it came after Palace played Strasbourg in the Conference League. Strasbourg won that game, Palace felt they probably should have won it, but Rosenior, the way his side set up was really impressive.”

Strasbourg came from behind to beat Palace in November and there’s every chance the two sides meet in the final in May. That could be Glasner’s last game before leaving Selhurst Park and Rosenior might be in Steve Parish’s board’s sights:

“Palace took note of that and were looking at him potentially to replace Oliver Glasner, they were very interested and liked what they saw from him there and at Hull City. But there have been suggestions that he will take time out of football after leaving Chelsea, so that could force Palace to look elsewhere.”

O’Connell suggested Rosenior might not be an immediate appointment, but still kept in mind “for the future”. There may be a desire from him to try and get his career back on track and Selhurst Park could be the ideal destination for him to do so.

Other Candidates

Rosenior is just one of six coaches who are seemingly being considered by Palace ahead of Glasner’s departure. There have been strong links to Andoni Iraola, who has confirmed he is leaving Bournemouth at the end of the season.

The problem the Eagles have is that Chelsea is also interested in Iraola, and that might see the Spaniard opt to replace Rosenior. It’s claimed that he’s already snubbed two offers from the club.

Former Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim, Coventry City’s Frank Lampard, ex-Tottenham manager Thomas Frank and their former striker Robbie Keane are also on the managerial shortlist. A decision doesn’t seem likely until the season concludes.
