- Crystal Palace face Liverpool
- Oliver Glasner can end reign with Anfield feat
- Arne Slot needs a win
Crystal Palace make the trip to Anfield today (April 25th) and Oliver Glasner will be relishing it. Not just because he will be taking charge of the Eagles for the last time at one of English football’s most glorious stadiums.
Glasner loves a day out in front of the Kop, and his astonishing record speaks for itself. He took over Palace in early 2024 and, since then, has been a major thorn in the Merseysiders’ side.
The South Londoners have played the role of the underdog to perfection with each of their three visits under Glasner. Avoiding defeat today means the Austrian accomplishes a rare feat.
That’s because if Palace aren’t beaten, Glasner will have never been beaten at Anfield. In his three visits to the 61,276-capacity stadium, he’s overseen two wins and one draw.
Glasner’s Anfield Record
The first was arguably the catalyst for his success with the Eagles, a 1-0 win courtesy of an Eberechi Eze winner. He started his tenure worryingly before that victory on April 14th, 2024.
Glasner beat Jurgen Klopp and ultimately cost the iconic German a title farewell. The Reds were in a tightly-poised title race before slipping to defeat on home soil.
The Austrian then oversaw a 1-1 draw on May 25th last season with the Reds already crowned Premier League champions. Ismaila Sarr opened the scoring but Mohamed Salah equalised with five minutes left.
That was somewhat of a lucky escape for the hosts. There was no escaping the nightmare of a 3-0 loss in the Carabao Cup fourth round earlier this season.
A Sarr double and a Yeremy Pino strike sealed a famous victory and continued to pile pressure on Slot. It’s worth noting that the Dutchman fielded a weakened team; even so, their fans were in uproar given the emphatic scoreline.
“Massive For Us” – Glasner on Another Anfield Trip
Glasner is looking forward to today’s encounter with Liverpool at a ground where he knows how to get the better of the hosts. The Palace boss not only talked up the unbeaten record but also the fact that his side can beat the Merseyside giants for a fourth time this season:
“We have the opportunity to win four times against Liverpool in one season. I think that’s something unique. First of all, you don’t play a team like Liverpool four times a year very often.”
He added:
“And on the other side, then having already three wins, that’s massive for us, and that’s why we’re really highly motivated, because maybe this will never happen again, and it’s a massive chance. That’s why we are really looking forward to this game at Anfield.”
Palace beat Liverpool 3-2 on penalties at Wembley in this season’s curtain raiser to lift the Community Shield. They then sealed a dramatic 2-1 win at Selhurst Park in the league before the Carabao Cup thrashing.
