- Crystal Palace lost to Liverpool
- Tyrick Mitchell came off injured
- Oliver Glasner gives update
Crystal Palace left-wing-back Tyrick Mitchell picked up an injury in yesterday’s 3-1 defeat to Liverpool. The Englishman came off at half-time at Anfield.
Mitchell has been a mainstay in Oliver Glasner’s side this season, but a gruelling fixture schedule is finally catching up to him. He was brought off for Borna Sosa for the second half against the Merseyside giants.
Palace suffered a 3-1 loss, courtesy of goals from Alexander Isak, Andy Robertson and Florian Wirtz. Daniel Munoz responded for the visitors, but in a controversial fashion.
Glasner on Mitchell
Mitchell has been dealing with an Achilles issue for some time and it proved too much on Saturday. That was Glasner’s explanation regarding bringing him off for Sosa when he spoke in his post-match press conference:
“He felt his achilles. It’s not just today, it’s an ongoing issue he has. Our medical department is treating it very well. Today he said that he couldn’t continue. Borna did very well – he hasn’t played for many weeks.“
This will undoubtedly raise fears over Mitchell ahead of Palace’s encounter with Shakhtar Donetsk on Thursday. The Eagles face the Ukrainians in Poland in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League semi-final.
Mitchell has been crucial for Glasner this season, appearing 47 times across competitions, posting three goals and as many assists. He reached 200 appearances for the club in a 2-1 win over Newcastle United earlier this month.
Sosa Gets Chance
It’s been a nightmare start for Sosa since arriving at Selhurst Park from Ajax last summer. The Croatian has failed to be the viable backup to Mitchell that many envisioned.
The 28-year-old made just his 18th appearance across competitions when he came on at Anfield. He did do well but there is still much to be admired.
Mitchell’s Achilles issue will be a concern ahead of the Conference League semi-final tie. It would be up to Sosa to step up if the English wing-back is unavailable this Thursday.
Sosa has plenty of experience, having previously played in the Europa League with Ajax. He has represented his country 27 times, so he knows all about handling big occasions.
