- Tyrick Mitchell has spoken to the press ahead of Palace’s game
- Left-back praises team’s success so far
- Intention is to lift Conference League trophy in Leipzig
Crystal Palace left-back Tyrick Mitchell has spoken about his side’s ambitions and the importance of competing in the Europa Conference League. The 26-year-old has played all bar three of Palace’s games in the competition this season, scoring twice and assisting once, including the second in the quarter final first leg win over Fiorentina.
Mitchell surpassed 200 Premier League appearances, and has barely missed a beat in the last four seasons, and has been unfortunate not to be included in the England set-up. Palace will be hoping that Mitchell’s form continues and he is able to continue his performances for Palace, as he continues his journey to becoming a true club legend.
Mitchell on Semi-Final
When asked about the importance of the Conference League this season, Mitchell expressed his thoughts on tournament football amid a Premier League season. “I think winning competitions is the main thing in football,” he started.
“We know this competition is a difficult competition, but we showed last year in the FA Cup we can match a lot of teams, that gave us a lot of confidence.”
That confidence is well earned, as Palace beat both Aston Villa and Manchester City on their way to lifting their first major trophy. The semi final win over Villa was as convincing as a win can be, demolishing a side that played in the quarter finals of the Champions League.
After making history last Summer, Palace have the opportunity to add to that with a European trophy. However, it is important that the fanbase recognises how huge of an opportunity this is.
“Getting into a semi-final of a European competition, you have to be happy and grateful for what you’ve achieved so far.”
Expectation belittling appreciation
There has felt as if there is an underlying sense of expectation from the Palace fanbase when it comes to this tournament. The bookie’s favourites from day one, Palace have been expected to simply breeze through the Conference League and win at a canter.
The reality is however, that there are talented sides in this competition and victory would mean equal amounts to all four remaining sides in the tournament.
As a player, it has of course been Mitchell’s maiden European campaign, and he reflected on how important it is to appreciate what his side has achieved so far.
“For me it’s my first time, so the only feeling is happiness. You’ve got to be happy going into any game and any situation.”
The squad’s positivity has seemingly returned after a brief hiatus, and that feel-good factor is going to play a key part in any success Palace might experience, as it did throughout the FA Cup run last campaign.
“The mood is very positive. We know what we’re capable of. We know how dangerous they are, they’re a good team who played in the Champions League last year, but we’re confident.”
