- Oliver Glasner leaves Crystal Palace in June
- Eintracht Frankfurt return ruled out
- Austrian has limited Premier League options
Oliver Glasner looks increasingly unlikely to make a return to Eintracht Frankfurt after he leaves Crystal Palace at the end of the season. The Austrian manager is departing Selhurst Park in June when his contract expires.
There has been much speculation over Glasner’s future and where he might end up once his time at Palace is over. His focus for now is on becoming the first coach in the club’s history to win a European trophy.
A potential return to Frankfurt has been one destination talked up for the 51-year-old since he announced his decision to end his reign. But a reunion with the Bundesliga club is now deemed “virtually impossible.”
Glasner Frankfurt Return ‘Impossible’
Glasner enjoyed two seasons in charge at Frankfurt and guided the Germans to UEFA Europa League glory in May 2022. He oversaw 39 wins and 29 defeats in 97 games and left the club a month after achieving a European trophy win.
Frankfurt have endured a difficult season under current manager Albert Riera and the former Liverpool winger is under pressure. They sit eighth in the Bundesliga table, a point off Conference League qualification.
An encounter with Borussia Dortmund on Friday is seen as a must-win for Riera if he wishes to continue at Deutsche Bank Park. But it is not expected that Glasner will be the one to replace him if the Spaniard were dismissed.
According to German outlet BILD (via Fussball Transfers), Glasner‘s return is considered “virtually impossible.” It’s said that there have been numerous made to the Palace boss but the Austrian has yet to make a decision over his next club.
Glasner has been linked with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Chelsea since he confirmed his exit in January. But it does feel likely that he heads abroad, potentially returning to Germany, although he might like the idea of challenging himself in Spain or Italy.
Palace Will Be Hoping Glasner Leaves England
The prospect of seeing Glasner remain in the Premier League but in an opposing team’s dugout is a weird one. He feels so tied to Palace that continuing in English football elsewhere almost feels wrong.
Nobody will fault the Austrian if he does decide to take on another job in the top flight. The riches of Newcastle United, where Eddie Howe is feeling the heat, could prove enticing.
Spurs and United are ruled out due to Roberto De Zerbi taking the North Londoners’ job. Michael Carrick is now “expected” to be offered the Old Trafford role.
The Chelsea vacancy could be one to watch, although the Blues seem to be eyeing Palace target Andoni Iraola, Xabi Alonso and Marco Silva. You could certainly make the case that there is no better position for him in English football than to stay put.
