- Oliver Glasner still leaving Crystal Palace
- Austrian departs end of June
- Eagles looking for successor
Oliver Glasner is reportedly not going back on his word and staying with Crystal Palace despite ‘loving’ his job. The Austrian is set to leave when his contract expires in June.
Palace are enjoying another fantastic season under Glasner and can add another winners’ medal to the trophy cabinet. They face Shakhtar Donetsk in the second leg of their UEFA Conference League semi-final tomorrow night (May 7th).
Glasner guided the Eagles to FA Cup glory last season and headed into this one knowing his contract was up in June. He announced in January his decision to leave when that expires and he could do so as a European champion.
Glasner Going
A report from Sky Sports‘ James Savundra claims that there is “no U-turn expected on Glasner’s exit.” There has been recent speculation over the 51-year-old changing his mind.
Glasner recently spoke of his delight in managing Palace in the closing stages of the season. He said:
“For me it’s easy because I’m doing this job, because I’m loving this job and then it’s always 100 per cent.”
Glasner has been in charge of Palace since February 2024 and has transformed the team into FA Cup winners. He can go one step further and lead the Eagles to Conference League glory should his side make the final in Leipzig later this month.
Clarity
As frustrating as it is to hear that Glasner isn’t going to be performing a U-turn, it at least allows everyone to focus on the job at hand. That is winning the club’s first European trophy in its history.
Glasner’s commitment has been obvious since the turn of the year, refuting suggestions that he was looking for an early exit. His players are with him, putting the South Londoners on the cusp of another historic feat.
That doesn’t mean the higher-ups aren’t busy behind the scenes trying to find a replacement. The same report claims that Andoni Iraola remains the top choice to succeed Glasner, although the board expect him to take another job.
Coventry City’s Frank Lampard, Fulham’s Marco Silva, Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna, and former Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank are all admired. A decision will be made at the end of the season.
