Which Teams Does Oliver Glasner Have the Best Record Against After First Anfield Defeat?

  • Oliver Glasner’s unbeaten Anfield record ended
  • Crystal Palace boss holds strong records against Premier League opposition
  • Austrian has been a thorn in Unai Emery’s side

Oliver Glasner led his Crystal Palace team to Anfield for the last time ever on April 25th, with his upcoming departure at the end of the season already confirmed. And the Austrian did so with an unbeaten record when facing Liverpool away from home.

Unfortunately, however, that record has now come to an end, despite the Eagles’ spirited display. It means he has now tasted defeat at the famous Merseyside ground and won’t be leaving Palace with an outstanding feat to his name.

Crystal Palace Rue Liverpool Loss

Palace led the Reds in expected goals, but they were unable to take their chances when presented. The outgoing Premier League champions didn’t make the same mistake, and a quickfire double from Alexander Isak and Andy Robertson at the end of the first half set the hosts well on their way towards three points.

The visitors would respond when Daniel Munoz struck with 19 minutes remaining. Glasner’s men pushed for an equaliser, but they were unable to find it, allowing Florian Wirtz to seal a 3-1 win and all three points for the hosts in the dying embers of second-half injury time.

The South-East London side currently sits 13th in the Premier League table, with neither relegation nor a top-half finish considered realistic if the oddsmakers are to be believed. The latest odds from Ozoon Sportsbook currently list Palace as an 11/2 outsider to finish tenth or above this term, with a bottom-ten finish considered far more likely.

Despite the Anfield record ending, Glasner does have several impressive records to his name from his reign at Palace.

Wolves

Palace’s record against Wolverhampton Wanderers under Glasner is almost perfect: Four wins, one draw, and precisely zero defeats. The first game came on the penultimate day of the 2023/24 season, with the Eagles picking up a stellar 3-1 victory at Molineux after goals from Michael Olise, Jean-Philippe Mateta, and Eberechi Eze.

That result was part of a blockbuster end to that season, in which Palace won six of their last seven games, drew the other, and powered their way up the table in the process.

The following season, the two games between Wolves and Palace featured a whopping ten goals. The first of them was a 2-2 draw in the Black Country, before the Eagles secured an impressive 4-2 at Selhurst Park after a brace from striker Eddie Nketiah.

This season, Glasner’s men have taken full advantage of Wolves’ plight at the foot of the table. Palace completed the league double over the West Midlands club, winning 2-0 on enemy territory back in November after goals from Daniel Muñoz and Yeremy Pino, before winning 1-0 in the reverse fixture in February after Evann Guessand’s last-gasp winner.

Brighton

Brighton are considered Crystal Palace’s biggest rivals, and Glasner has never suffered defeat against the Seagulls in his two full seasons in charge at Selhurst Park. In his first clash in charge between the two rivals, The Eagles emerged with a 3-1 victory at the Amex thanks to Trevor Chalobah’s opener and a brace from winger Ismaila Sarr. The reverse fixture was an ill-tempered affair, with referee Anthony Taylor dishing out no fewer than three red cards – two of them to Palace – but even that couldn’t stop the
Eagles from picking up a 2-1 win.

Glasner’s perfect 100% record came to an end earlier this season when he was forced to settle for a goalless draw at Selhurst Park back in November. In the away fixture on the South Coast, however, his side returned to winning ways, winning 1-0 with Sarr netting the winner once again.

Aston Villa

One team that will certainly be happy to see the back of Glasner this summer is Aston Villa. Palace have squared off against the Villans no fewer than seven times with their highly rated Austrian manager in charge, and they haven’t lost a single one of those games, winning five and drawing two.

Their first clash with Glasner at the helm came on the final day of the 2023/24 season, with Palace running out 5-0 victors after a stunning hat trick from Jean-Philippe Mateta and a brace from Eberechi Eze. Last season, the two teams would face off a whopping four times as the Eagles dumped Villa out of both the League Cup and the FA Cup, the latter being a one-sided semifinal which Palace won 3-0. In the league, the two teams played out a 2-2 draw at Villa Park, before Glasner’s men won 4-1 in the reverse fixture
in South-East London.

Ismaila Sarr netted no fewer than five goals in those four games, and he was on song again earlier this season as Palace picked up a 3-0 win at Villa Park. Unai Emery’s side would eventually stop the rot, escaping Selhurst Park with a goalless draw back in January, but they will still be glad to see Glasner go.
