Maxence Lacroix steps in as France suffer World Cup exit

Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix was handed an unexpected World Cup semi-final appearance as France suffered a 2-0 defeat by Spain.

Lacroix replaced the injured William Saliba after half an hour in Dallas, with the Arsenal centre-back unable to continue after going down without contact.

France were already behind when Lacroix entered the match. Mikel Oyarzabal had converted a penalty following Lucas Digne’s foul on Lamine Yamal.

Didier Deschamps introduced Lacroix alongside Dayot Upamecano as France attempted to remain within touching distance of Spain.

Lacroix earns valuable minutes on difficult night

Lacroix helped France reach half-time without conceding again, but Spain doubled their advantage through Pedro Porro in the 58th minute.

The defender operated on the right side of France’s reshaped back line and produced a composed display despite entering during a difficult period.

Spain controlled possession and limited France’s attacking opportunities before completing a 2-0 victory to reach Sunday’s final.

Palace had followed Lacroix and Jean-Philippe Mateta’s progress closely before the match, with both players hoping to reach their first World Cup final. ReadCrystalPalace previewed how the Palace pair were preparing for France’s semi-final against Spain.

Lacroix’s appearance continued an impressive international summer and provided further experience at the highest level.

France’s defeat ends their hopes of winning the tournament, although they are still scheduled to contest the third-place play-off before Lacroix can begin his post-World Cup break.

Pierre Sage will hope to welcome the 26-year-old back to South London once his international commitments and required recovery period are complete.

His club future also remains the subject of speculation, with Chelsea continuing to monitor him. Palace remain in a strong position and have not agreed a sale.

Lacroix’s immediate focus will be completing his World Cup campaign before discussions over his Palace future gather pace.
