During France’s 1-0 away win against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, Palace midfielder Yohan Cabaye was substituted a minute after half time, and he was replaced by Manchester United’s Morgan Schneiderlin.
Les Bleus won the match thanks to substitute Mathieu Valbuena netted five minutes from time to secure the win for Didier Deschamps in the friendly.
The 29-year-old played as the defensive midfielder of the 4-1-3-2 formation, but the midfield creator was out of his depth in that position being overrun without help from the attacking talent in front of him. When asked why he was substituted, the midfielder admitted that he wasn’t the right man for the role and his national side needed the win.
“It was important to restart with a win. There is little time left before the competition and we need to take advantage of that by working and progressing.”
In the summer, Cabaye returned to the Premier League for his second spell in the league following his time at Ligue 1 Champions PSG after his £17.5 million move to the French capital. Alan Pardew signed Cabaye from the French champions for £9 million.
Since joining, he has started all four of the Eagles’ Premier League campaign. The Frenchman admitted to a slight injury when speaking to the press after the game via GetFootballNewsFrance.
“I asked to come off at half-time because I felt a slight pain around the pubic bone but I do not think that it is worrying.”
During his time in Paris, he won three Ligue 1 titles, one French Cup and one French Supercup.
