Crystal Palace defender Scott Dann has backed fellow Eagles star Dwight Gayle following the striker’s red card in the 1-3 defeat against West Ham on Saturday.
After receiving two yellow cards in the first half of the game against the Hammers, the 26-year-old was sent off with the game poised at 1-1, with the hosts’ goal coming from a penalty that Gayle had won.
Following the red card, West Ham were bundling the pressure on the Palace defence, which eventually conceded two late goals from Manuel Lanzini and Dimitri Payet respectively.
Gayle being tripped in the box resulted in the penalty that was converted by Yohan Cabaye, his third converted spot kick in three games, to get the Eagles back to 1-1 following a sloppy goal scored by Carl Jenkinson as Wilfried Zaha didn’t do his defending duties.
The former Peterborough striker picked up two yellow cards for two tackles that, if you looked at it again, probably didn’t need to be made.
Speaking after the game, Dann said:
I think he’ll learn and it’s never easy. He hasn’t played much this season, he wants to impress and he was trying to do his best for the team.
Unfortunately he’s ended up getting sent off and we’ve ended up losing the game.
