Pardew: Palace are aiming for Europe

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew has admitted that qualification for Europe is the target for his side.

The Eagles will go into Christmas in sixth position in the Premier League table equal on points with Tottenham in fourth and Manchester United in fifth and Pardew, speaking after his side’s 2-1 over Stoke, says that they want to finish the season in the top six, at a minimum.

We’ve got ourselves into 6th position and we want to fight and stay there, that’s really our priority. But to fight there means you have to look up, and we’re looking up, and that’s the type of manager I am.

Pardew also spoke about the gap between the so-called ‘bigger’ sides in the league and the rest of the pack, and he said that he feels like the chasm is shortening all the time.

We were all beginning to worry three or four years ago that it looked like the gap was only going to get bigger, and ironically it hasn’t, and for all the money that’s being spent, we’re getting the quality of 11 players on the pitch that are not too far away from some of the top teams.

The Eagles boss pointed to Leicester, who he jokingly said keep stealing the headlines from Palace, as another perfect example of a club who are breaking into the established group of top sides.

You look at Leicester’s result at Everton – we’re not letting it rest so, therefore, the top teams are probably more concerned than they’ve been for a long time… good! It’s been a great Premier League, we’ve been a part of that, Leicester have been a bigger part, it’s fantastic for the league.

The Eagles will travel to Bournemouth on Boxing Day hoping to continue to push for the top six, and maybe even more.
