Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has denied having any interest in signing Jermain Defoe this month.
Defoe completed a loan move to Rangers last week, signing an 18-month loan deal away from Bournemouth.
Reports had claimed that Palace were one of the clubs keen on signing him during the January transfer window, but Hodgson has revealed that Palace were not one of the chasing pack.
Speaking to The Daily Record, Hodgson said this:
It’s not true, did people check that one up or not?
It’s not true unfortunately, we had no interest in Jermain Defoe.
I saw his name mentioned in relation to the club but it’s one thing people relating their players that they’re anxious to find moves for to our club and another thing our club initiating moves to sign a player.
I can state quite categorically we made no move at all to sign Jermain here.
I like him and I think he’s good player and I’m pleased he’s gone to Glasgow Rangers, but we were not one of the candidates for his signature.
Defoe left Bournemouth after failing to score in eight appearances this season, following on from his four goals in 26 games last season.
The 36-year-old has had an impressive career – scoring goals regularly for the likes of West Ham, Tottenham and Sunderland.
He has been capped 57 times by England, scoring 20 goals, with his most recent coming in 2017.
Palace are on the lookout for a striker this month and recently backed out of a deal to sign Dominic Solanke.
