Palace target Diame amid contract speculation

Crystal Palace are considering a move for Newcastle’s Mohamed Diame, with the midfielder set to be out of contract this summer, the Daily Star reports.

Diame’s current deal at St James’ Park will expire at the end of this season, however an automatic 12-month contract extension will be triggered in the midfielder’s contract if he starts three of the Magpies’ remaining eight games of the league season.

Besiktas and Galatasaray are also said to be interested in signing the Senegal international on a free transfer this summer, while the report suggests clubs in Italy and Spain are monitoring Diame’s situation.

The 31-year-old revealed he would ideally like to stay at Newcastle, but is happy to move on should the club not look to extend his contract.

They know I want to stay, I am happy at Newcastle. It was tough at the beginning but I settled down. But if I have to go, then I will go, it is no problem.

Diame has not started a Premier League game for Newcastle since early January due to the emergence of Sean Longstaff, but the midfielder could force his way back into the starting lineup with the youngster set to miss the rest of the season with injury.
