Newcastle are set to rival Crystal Palace in the race to sign Everton midfielder James McCarthy, as the 28-year-old looks set to leave the Toffees this summer.
Palace have made just one permanent signing thus far in the summer transfer window, but reportedly tabled an £8million bid for McCarthy earlier this month as they look to bolster their small squad.
However, according to the Express, Newcastle are interested in a move for McCarthy and look set to rival Palace in the pursuit of the Republic of Ireland international.

McCarthy has just one year remaining on his current deal at Goodison Park, and Marco Silva is said to be keen on offloading the midfielder this summer given his recent injury struggles.
The 28-year-old broke his leg in two places in January 2018, after a coming together with West Brom striker Salomon Rondon, ruling him out for the remainder of the campaign and the majority of the 2018/19 season.
