- Tyrick Mitchell reached over 200 Crystal Palace appearances
- English full-back proud of his rise at Selhurst Park
- Has advice for current academy gems
Tyrick Mitchell has reflected on his growth as a professional footballer and spoken proudly of his time at Crystal Palace. The left-back has become a fan favourite ever since arriving at the club during his youth.
The Englishman joined Palace’s youth academy from Brentford in the summer of 2016. He climbed up the ranks before debuting at the senior level in the 2020-21 campaign.
Mitchell has since made over 230 appearances for the club, playing a key role in the FA Cup win last season. At 26, he’s in his prime and is almost a veteran, given his years of service and time spent with the Eagles.
Tyrick Treasures Palace Milestone
Mitchell has surprisingly only earned two caps for England, and Thomas Tuchel doesn’t seem likely to select him for the World Cup. But that’s to Palace’s advantage, given the player is solely focused on his club and helping them enter a new era once Oliver Glasner leaves.
The London-born full-back reached 200 appearances for the South Londoners back in October. He explained to club media what it meant to him:
“It’s massive. It’s a milestone that you want to tick off. You want to play as many games as possible. I’m happy that I’ve reached 200 so quickly. So I just take pride in that.”
Mitchell has the chance to add another winner’s medal to his trophy cabinet. Palace remain in the Europa Conference League, facing Fiorentina in the quarter-finals with the first leg on Thursday (April 9th).
Steve Parish will be eager to get Mitchell’s future sorted out sooner rather than later. His current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2027 and top clubs have tended to keep track of his performances.
Mitchell on his Rise
Palace continues to lean on youth, and the academy is developing some bright gems. Joel Drakes-Thomas, 16, and Benji Casey, 18, are among those catching the eye.
Mitchell reflected on his transition from the academy to the senior team:
“I don’t think I feel any extra pressure of playing for the first-team from the Academy. I think I’ve got that pride because, obviously, Crystal Palace gave me the chance to become a professional player, to play in these games.”
He added:
“So, obviously, I’ve got pride in that aspect for the fans, for myself, and for everyone who is a part of this club. But I wouldn’t say I felt pressure in coming from the Academy. I just got that consistency from training and training every day. That gave me the confidence that if the chance came, I’d be able to perform.”
Mitchell is now in a position to start providing mentorship to such youngsters breaking through. He knows what it takes to become a success at Selhurst Park.
