It appears that Crystal Palace have decided to keep Oliver Glasner in charge despite a worrying run of form. His side has won just one of 15 games across competitions.
Not only are the results concerning, but the team’s performances have been a tough watch as of late. A dismal 1-1 draw away to Bosnian minnows Zrinjski Mostar on Thursday saw fans turn on their manager.
There were chants of “we want Glasner out” and “getting sacked in the morning” throughout the Europa Conference League play-off first leg. The Austrian responded by telling supporters that they should “stay humble”, a tone deaf swipe at the Selhurst Park faithful.
Glasner’s humble pie
It’s hard for Palace fans to accept that stance from Glasner when his team are putting in shambolic performances. Last season’s FA Cup triumph is the club’s greatest achievement.
Glasner oversaw a glorious day at Wembley and a 1-0 win over Manchester City. A true underdog story that wrote his name in the Eagles’ history books.
The 51-year-old is now overseeing one of the worst Premier League campaigns in the club’s history. That’s because his troops are statistically the poorest performers, even worse than rock-bottom Wolverhampton Wanderers.
WhoScored has revealed that Palace have underperformed their xG by -17.12. That is more than any other team in the top-flight this season.
Glasner’s side host Wolves at Selhurst on Sunday (February 22nd), and the pressure will be on the Austrian. There is a possibility of getting dragged into the relegation battle if he doesn’t turn the tide quickly.
Palace sit 13th in the table, eight points above the drop zone with 12 games remaining. They have won eight and lost 10 of their 26 games, scoring 28 goals and conceding 32.
Wolves worry
The expectation heading into Sunday’s clash with Wolves is that Palace should come out on top. They face one of the worst Premier League teams in history, who have just one win in 27 games.
Rob Edwards’ men are all but packing their bags and heading down to the Championship. But they are at least showing fighting spirit amid a nightmare season.
Palace will come into the game following the dreadful midweek draw in Bosnia. The visitors were also in action and sprung a huge surprise by drawing 2-2 with league leaders Arsenal at Molineux.
A defeat to Edwards’ relegation battlers should surely be the final nail in the coffin for Glasner. Fabrizio Romano reports that discussions took place on Friday, and the club opted to continue with him in charge.
Glasner’s dig at the club’s fanbase came after that decision, and there is now undeniable tension. He’s not only losing the supporters, but judging by the players’ performances, he’s lost the dressing room.
