- Crystal Palace star Lacroix earned France debut
- Clubs circling for the Eagles defender
- Real Madrid the latest to show interest
Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix was a stand-out performer for France over the international break, after a last minute debut call-up to the senior team following William Saliba’s withdrawal from the squad.
After coming on as a substitute in France’s first game, a 2-1 win over Brazil, Lacroix was selected to start the second fixture against Colombia, as Les Bleus won 3-1.
Whilst Palace fans will feel the selection is justified and undoubtedly feel pride in seeing yet another Eagle thrive on the international stage, there may well be some concern that accompanies that joy.
International performances and tournaments have forever been a consistent pathway for players to make big moves in their careers, and the same will be the case for Lacroix should he be selected for the World Cup in just over two months’ time.
Looking at Lacroix
In The Athletic’s recent mailbag, Matt Woosnam revealed that Palace would not be keen to lose yet another player in central defence, after Marc Guéhi’s January move to Manchester City:
“Maxence Lacroix’s call-up to, and strong debut for, the French national team over this international break may spark interest in him, but he is a mainstay of the Palace defence and they will not look to have too much turnover in such an important area of the team, especially after selling Marc Guéhi to Manchester City in January.”
Jaydee Canvot’s form has potentially reduced the urgency to replace Guéhi, but losing Lacroix would certainly cause issues in terms of defensive depth for the Eagles, and whoever is coming in as the new Palace manager.
Another Unwanted Transfer Saga
Since signing for Palace two seasons ago, the Frenchman has developed rapidly, ironing out mistakes and becoming one of the most consistent performers for the South London side.
The role he played in Palace’s FA Cup-winning campaign last season was crucial, not only taking on a leadership role within the squad but also encapsulating the feeling of the fans and just how important it was that Palace were the ones lifting that famous trophy at Wembley.
The current crop of top-level central defenders is starting to dwindle, with the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Antonio Rudiger and Marquinhos getting older and older. Big clubs are starting to circle Lacroix, including reportedly Real Madrid.
A price tag in the region of €60 million has been rumoured, and a successful tournament this Summer, should he go, would only increase that price, potentially opening the door for Palace to bring in a big name.
